3/23 to 3/27: World History
The assignments for the week will be up by Sunday night or Monday morning.
Preview: You read about the ABSOLUTE MONARCHS of Europe centralizing their power and building great nations. Their efforts to be the one true power in their nations, however, came at a cost. Creating a nation where power is centralized at the top leaves nearly everyone else without power. They have no say when the king wants to go to war and heavily taxes the people to fight those wars. The poor suffered greatly in nations like France, as a result. In nations like England, many people thought one person should not have that much power, and Parliament served as a check to that power, although the king often ignored Parliament. In both cases, revolutions shifted the power from the king to the masses. The assignments below reflect these great changes.

Week of 3/30: World History
Preview: While absolute monarchs took control of many nations in Europe, two new movements began bubbling up across the continent. Continuing in the spirit established by the Renaissance and Reformation, the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment were movements that attempted to understand the world and nature around us, and attempted to determine the best way for society to be governed. Both movements have impacted the way we understand and live in our world today.

Thursday: Today, we will see how the Industrial Revolution could not be contained in Great Britain, but spread throughout the world to places like Belgium, France, and even the United States. Although these other nations copied and emulated what the British had done, they also found new ways to industrialize based on what resources were available to them.
We will use the same document that I sent you yesterday, so be prepared at 10:10. The PowerPoint is below.

World History, Assignments, 5/11-5/15:
This week, we will turn our attention to a sentiment that dominated European attitudes and also spread throughout the world: NATIONALISM! Nationalism is defined as an intense pride and love for one's own country or people. I'm American. I'm Bengali. I'm Yemeni. These are all notions of NATIONALISM. It can be positive (see: the Olympics), but, oh, can it also be negative (see: Nazi Germany). Nationalism dominated Europe in the 1800s, as some ethnicities unified into much larger, powerful new nations--like in the cases of Germany and Italy--while some ethnicities were able to break free from their former country and create a new one, as was the case with Greece. Whatever form nationalism took, it created the modern world we live in and also lead to great competition (imperialism) and devastating conflict (World War I).

Thursday, 5/14: New Imperialism
The Industrial Revolution made a lot of people and nations very wealthy. European nations were not content with just using the resources within their borders for industrialization. They started looking outside of Europe. In the late 1800s and into the 1900s, European nations began to colonize Africa and Asia to extract the natural resources that are found there. Please download the file below and be prepared to take interactive notes. The vocabulary is on the second file below near the end of the powerpoint.

World History, Assignments, 6/8 - 6/12
This week will be intense, but not too intense. We have to fast-forward through history. We will look at the Russian Revolution, WWII, the Cold War, and the history of the last 2 decades. Seems like a lot. Because of the pandemic and shutting of schools, and then the amazing effort by our staff to get as many students engaged as possible, the pace of the class got all haywire. In other words, we are a bit behind. As a result, we will get the crash course of world history this week. Hang on.
Monday: Today, we will discuss the vocabulary of the Russian Revolution and some of its causes. The file below is an illustrated timeline of the Russian Revolution. It explores all of the Causes and Effects of the revolution. You will be doing a majority of it as homework. Your homework for Monday night is to read the articles and finish the questions for the 6 causes of the Russian Revolution.
